IRON HORSE, Plumas County — November 3, 2026. A July 16 wildfire evacuation exercise organized with the City of Portola focused partly on a simulated fast-moving fire threatening the Iron Horse neighborhood. The event was a training exercise, not an actual evacuation order.
What did the exercise test?
According to Portola’s official emergency preparedness page, participants reviewed unified-command decisions, when to issue evacuation warnings or orders, activation of Plumas County Sheriff’s emergency notification system and traffic management. The scenario also considered shelter arrangements at Portola Elementary School and the evacuation planning needs of Eastern Plumas Health Care.
Why Iron Horse was included
The exercise explicitly named Nakoma, Iron Horse and South Portola as communities exposed in the hypothetical scenario. That makes the training relevant to residents who may need to leave by limited mountain roads during a real emergency. The city says participants held a tabletop exercise and an after-action review, with a detailed report to be made public when available.
How households can prepare
Plumas County uses the Genasys emergency notification service. Residents should register their current contact information, find their evacuation zone and prepare more than one practical evacuation route. A map or evacuation plan does not substitute for actual instructions from emergency personnel during an incident.
