IRON HORSE, Plumas County — November 3, 2026. Some households in the Iron Horse area near Portola have an important broadband update: Plumas-Sierra Telecommunications says construction has begun in portions of the Ironhorse project area, but it has not announced a firm service-availability date.
What has the provider confirmed?
In its latest broadband update, Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative says Ironhorse construction has begun in some locations and that fiber availability remains to be determined. It distinguishes Ironhorse from Valley Ranch, where construction and splicing are described as complete and residents may contact the provider to arrange installation. A completion notice for a neighboring project should not be mistaken for a promise of service to a particular Iron Horse address.
How the project fits a larger expansion
The cooperative explains that Plumas-Sierra Telecommunications has accepted federal and state grants to expand last-mile connectivity in remote parts of Plumas, Sierra and Lassen counties. Construction began on its multiyear fiber program in 2024. Weather and permitting can affect timelines, especially in mountain communities.
What residents can do now
Residents should request an address-specific eligibility check, ask whether underground work or a property access agreement will be required, and avoid scheduling a change of internet provider before a firm installation appointment. The cooperative publishes project-by-project updates rather than a single countywide opening date.
