IRON HORSE, Plumas County — October 29, 2026. Plumas-Sierra Telecommunications’ Iron Horse–Valley Ranch fiber project remains a useful reference for residents tracking rural broadband access. A California Public Utilities Commission environmental notice dated October 21, 2025, describes roughly two miles of aerial fiber and 33 miles of underground fiber infrastructure in the Iron Horse and Valley Ranch communities off Highways 70 and 89.
What does the official filing cover?
The CPUC identified the proposal as a fiber infrastructure project serving unincorporated Plumas County. It issued a Notice of Exemption citing categories for existing facilities, replacement, small new utility structures and minor land alterations. The plan describes a physical network build; it is not merely an advertising announcement by an internet provider.
Does this mean every household can order service?
No. The 2025 filing documents a proposed project and environmental treatment. It does not establish that trenching was completed by October 2026, that every address in Iron Horse is connected, that a particular service price has been approved, or that a customer installation appointment can be scheduled today. Homes along the same highway corridor can have different network eligibility.
What should residents ask before making a decision?
Check availability by exact street address with the telecommunications provider. Ask whether service is actually live, the offered download and upload speeds, total monthly price after promotional periods, installation fees, contract requirements and estimated connection dates. The 35-mile combined construction length is a network estimate, not the length of service a single household will receive.
Why rural broadband deserves local reporting
Connectivity affects emergency communications, remote work, school assignments and access to health appointments. For small communities, a project can be significant even if its physical construction is largely underground. A useful next update would require construction completion evidence or an official provider service announcement—not repetition of the old exemption as a new approval.
